FluidAI Medical Announces $15M in Series A Funding for AI-Driven Postoperative Monitor at HLTH 2023

MedTech FluidAI Medical secures funding to empower healthcare providers with data-driven insights to transform postoperative care.

KITCHENER, ON, Oct. 10, 2023 – FluidAI Medical (FluidAI), a pioneer in leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) for postoperative patient monitoring, today announced that it has raised $15 million in Series A funding, led by SOSV and Graphene Ventures with participation from Boutique Venture Partners, Threshold Impact, Cur8 Capital, Leva Capital, Kyto Technology & Life Science Inc., Juno Pharmaceuticals, and a number of esteemed angels, funds and government funding organizations.

Following any surgical intervention, there are inherent risks of adverse outcomes, irrespective of how minor or major the procedure may be. These complications can range from infections, bleeding, and wound healing issues to significant disability or death. They not only jeopardize the health and recovery of the patient but also place additional burdens on the healthcare system, including prolonged hospital stays and increased medical expenses. Recognizing these complications early on is paramount for the comprehensive care of surgical patients.

Some of the most devastating complications that can arise after surgery are anastomotic leaks, which occur after surgery when there’s a connection (anastomosis) between two parts of the digestive tract. A leak from this connection can lead to serious complications, including sepsis (blood infection) and death. On average, the leak rate stands at 8% across various types of surgeries, but this can spike to as high as 30% in more complex procedures. The condition also comes with a concerning average mortality rate of 12%. Per 1,000 patients undergoing colorectal surgery in the United States, anastomotic leaks add an extra 9,500 days of hospital care and impose an average additional cost of about $50,000 per affected patient.

FluidAI’s first solution, Stream™ Platform, uses advanced sensors and an AI-driven algorithm that may prompt surgeons to identify these leaks earlier, helping surgeons achieve better clinical outcomes and efficiencies within the greater healthcare system. FluidAI’s timely funding underscores the industry’s pressing need for innovative solutions that can ensure patient safety, reduce hospital stays, and ultimately cut down healthcare costs.

“This funding not only validates our vision but also fuels our mission. At FluidAI, our goal is to continuously push the boundaries of what’s possible in postoperative care, ensuring patients recover safely and quickly. With the trust and support of our investors, we’re poised to make a monumental impact on how data informs care decisions,” said Youssef Helwa, CEO at FluidAI.

“FluidAI is a perfect example of AI-powered proprietary sensing being developed to save lives,” said Duncan Turner, SOSV GP. “With FluidAI, surgeons can ensure better clinical outcomes, shorter hospital stays for patients, and cost efficiencies across the healthcare ecosystem. We’re thrilled to back the FluidAI team, a passionate group of scientists, engineers and healthcare professionals who are leading this compelling development in post-operative care.”

“FluidAI is pushing the frontiers of AI for early postoperative leak monitoring in a way that could save many lives by detecting leaks earlier than what surgeons are accustomed to seeing today. Our investment marks a pivotal step in revolutionizing medical technology. Together, we are committed to a healthier, brighter future for all,” said Nabil Borhanu, Founder & Managing Partner, Graphene Ventures

The investment will allow FluidAI to expand into existing and new global markets, grow its dynamic team, amplify R&D efforts, and introduce novel AI-driven solutions catering to a broader range of postoperative complications.

Nebraska Startup, Dwellr, Raises Pre-seed Round to Transform the Search for Senior Care

Dwellr is an online marketplace that directly connects families with the best senior communities tailored to the needs of their loved ones.

LINCOLN, Neb., Oct. 10, 2023 — Dwellr, a Nebraska-based startup, has secured $500,000 in funding, led by Move Venture Capital and Invest Nebraska. This initial round of funding allows founders Davey Owens and Drew Tuzson to publicly launch the online marketplace that is designed to transform the way families find senior care by offering a direct connection between seniors and their desired communities.

Dwellr was founded because the founders discovered that searching for senior living is an extremely antiquated experience in 2023. Most senior living communities are forced into using traditional referral services, meaning families are required to fill out convoluted online forms and receive cold calls and emails from communities across the state.

“Getting dozens of calls a day from senior communities within a 50-mile radius to schedule a tour is extremely stressful during an already sensitive time,” stated Owens, CEO of Dwellr. “So we created an experience similar to how Zillow works, but for senior living.”

Dwellr’s mission goes beyond simplifying searches. It challenges the status quo of referral services that often prioritize commissions over genuine senior needs. With its user-friendly interface and direct communication channels, Dwellr ensures families can make informed decisions with higher confidence.

“Dwellr provides a user-friendly and streamlined experience for consumers searching for senior living options in their local area,” stated Thomas Cloutier, CMO of Arete Living, a Dwellr customer. “Just as leading household rental companies have succeeded, I believe Dwellr has the potential to establish itself as a household name in the senior living industry.”

With its initial launch targeting cities in Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, and Colorado, Dwellr is gearing up to expand its services, aiming to set a new industry standard in senior care searches.

About Dwellr
Dwellr is an online marketplace revolutionizing the search for senior care facilities by offering a direct, transparent, and efficient platform that connects families with the best senior communities tailored to the needs of their loved ones.

EVOLUTION SPACE CLOSES BRIDGE FUNDING ROUND; OPENS PRODUCTION FACILITY AT NASA STENNIS

STENNIS SPACE CENTER, Miss., Oct. 10, 2023 — Evolution Space, a Mojave, Calif.-based solid propulsion and launch provider, announced today with NASA Stennis that it has signed an agreement and begun construction on the first-ever solid propulsion center and solid rocket motor testing at the historic NASA Stennis Space Center. The company also announced the close of its bridge funding round on the heels of multiple successful flight missions in April and May of this year, enabling the execution of the deal with Stennis.

Located near the iconic NASA test stands, the Evolution Space Propulsion Center will repurpose former Mississippi Army Ammunition Plant facilities acquired by NASA in 2011. The center is scheduled for active operations in Q2, 2024, and will host the company’s 200-gallon propellant mixer, provide propellant storage, and serve as an operational base for static fire testing using the E-3 Test Complex.

“By partnering with NASA, we are able to rapidly stand up a facility which will add considerable capability to the U.S. solid rocket motor industrial base” said Manny Ballestero, U.S. Army Veteran and Evolution’s VP of Production and Development. “We look forward to the future of our partnership as we continue to expand our presence at Stennis.”

The ability for efficient interfacing with Evolution’s growing testing and flight operations in the Gulf region, in partnership with The Spaceport Company, factored heavily into the company’s site selection process. The deal also doubles down on NASA’s growing support of the private spaceflight sector.

“This is another great addition to South Mississippi’s commercial space engagement,” said Dr. Rick Gilbrech, Director of NASA Stennis Space Center. “Evolution Space gains access to critical NASA Stennis infrastructure and expertise as it continues to build its propulsion capabilities. In turn, we continue frontline work with commercial companies as we support NASA’s commitment to increase access to space and grow our federal city. We look forward to working with Evolution Space.”

The selection of South Mississippi was a personal one for Steve Heller, Evolution’s Founder, CTO and Chief Executive Officer, who traces the very beginnings of the company back to his earliest propulsion work as a child in nearby Clarke County, Mississippi. “We’re stoked to be part of NASA’s mission to create jobs and fuel South Mississippi’s local economy, and selfishly the full-circle angle is a cool one for me,” Heller said. “Mississippi is where my rocket journey started, and now we’re back to kick things into high gear.”

The company is currently developing Spyglass, a 6-foot vessel, and Cutlass, a 13-foot vessel, each outfitted with remotely updatable software and capable of carrying diverse payloads in communication-denied and GPS-denied environments. These systems enable real-time, collaborative, and autonomous mission-level decision-making, and are designed to navigate the challenges of maritime environments. Engineered as attritable systems, these vessels offer minimal life-cycle costs and considerable potential for scalability.

“Saronic has brought together the top talent from the innovation world, the military, and the defense industry to address the most critical strategic needs for our Navy,” said Joe Lonsdale, the managing partner of 8VC and co-founder of Saronic via the 8VC Build program.

“We are honored to have the backing of seasoned investors who are fully aligned with our mission to deliver top-tier technology to our warfighters as fast as possible,” said Rob Lehman, Saronic’s co-founder and Chief Commercial Officer. “This funding round will enable us to sustain our rapid growth, development, and delivery efforts.”

Saronic is a defense company with a dynamic blend of innovators, seasoned warfighters, and top-tier engineers and technologists from various fields, all dedicated to bringing autonomy to American and allied navies. This investment reflects a strong belief in the team’s capability to rapidly provide autonomous solutions tailored to the modern naval landscape.

Wanda Fish Raises USD $7M in Seed Funding To Accelerate Pilot Production of Cultivated Bluefin Tuna

Netherlands-based aquaculture investment fund Aqua-Spark led the round, joined by additional investors The Kitchen Hub, Peregrine Ventures, PICO Venture Partners, MOREVC, and CPT Capital

REHOVOT, Israel , Oct. 9, 2023 — Today, FoodTech start-up Wanda Fish Technologies, Ltd., announces it has secured USD 7 million in seed funding. The round was led by Netherlands-based global aquaculture investment fund Aqua-Spark, with additional funding from returning pre-seed investors The Kitchen Hub by the Strauss Group, Peregrine Ventures, LLC, PICO Venture Partners, MOREVC, and CPT Capital, LLP. Since its inception, Wanda Fish has raised USD 10 million in funding.

Founded in 2021 by The Kitchen Hub and Daphna Heffetz, a leading figure in biotechnology-based innovation, Wanda Fish develops premium quality, cultivated fish outside of the ocean. This new injection of capital will boost Wanda Fish’s ability to accelerate the creation and increase the scale of a cultivated whole-cut filet of bluefin tuna.

These cuts replicate the texture, flavor, and nutritional value of wild-caught bluefin tuna as they comprise the fish’s muscle and fat cells and contain the same native proteins and fatty acids, including omega-3 and other essential nutrients. As a cultivated filet, Wanda Fish’s bluefin tuna has no common ocean pollutants, like mercury, and is produced under non-GMO standards.

“We are excited and feel incredibly fortunate to collaborate with Aqua-Spark in propelling our venture forward,” says Daphna Heffetz, Ph.D., co-founder and CEO of Wanda Fish. “We are on a shared mission to improve the global food value chain, creating a tasty, more sustainable future for all. This financial backing by leading global venture funds gives us significant leverage to make sustainably cultivated, cruelty-free, and ocean-friendly bluefin tuna a reality.”

Valued for its nutritional content, texture, and flavor, bluefin tuna is an expensive, sought-after species that is particularly popular with high-end sushi restaurants due to its perfect balance of fat and protein.

Further driving demand is bluefin tuna’s inaccessibility. Overfishing of bluefin tuna has pushed it to the brink of endangerment, leading governments to significantly limit fishing quotas. Meanwhile, tuna is considered unsustainable to farm due to the feed resources, pen size requirements, and difficulty of breeding in captivity. In addition, tuna is one of the oceans’ most polluted fish, often contaminated with plastic debris and extremely high levels of heavy metals such as mercury, intensifying the need for an accessible, stable supply of sustainable alternatives.

Wanda Fish has made rapid progress on key developmental breakthroughs toward achieving a whole-cut bluefin tuna prototype to provide an abundant, premium source of highly nutritious fish that will alleviate strain on the delicate ocean ecosystem. This includes forming a 3D filet structure using bluefin tuna cells, differentiated into both muscle and fat tissues. With its proprietary technique, Wanda Fish can precisely control fat levels in its end products. This enables the creation of a diverse range of filet cuts, including the highly sought-after Toro premium cut.

“In such a burgeoning and innovative sector, we are pleased to welcome Wanda Fish into our portfolio of companies based on the remarkable speed with which they’ve met significant milestones,” asserts Lissy Smit, CEO of Aqua-Spark. “We firmly believe in a future where sustainably farmed and cultivated seafood will work in concert with one another to alleviate the burden of overfishing, especially species like bluefin tuna which are deemed unsustainable to farm.”

“As the start-up’s incubator, we’ve had the privilege of witnessing the immense progress Wanda Fish has made since their inception less than two years ago,” enthuses Jonathan Berger, CEO of The Kitchen FoodTech Hub. “Wanda Fish is transforming visionary ideas into a tangible, cutting-edge product that is just steps away from reaching its prototype. This is credited to a skilled and ambitious multinational team led by Daphna Heffetz that is undoubtedly poised for a resounding success story in the thriving alternative protein space; this spells good news for an overburdened marine ecosystem.”

About Wanda Fish

Wanda Fish is a cutting-edge company spearheading a more sustainable future for ocean seafood. Through disruptive technologies, they produce a variety of whole-cut cultivated premium fish filets outside of the ocean. The company’s first product in development is the whole-cut cultivated bluefin tuna filet composed of the fish’s muscle and fat cells. It bears the authentic texture, flavor, and nutritional richness of wild-caught fish.

The Wanda Fish team comprises a highly skilled multidisciplinary team. Daphna Heffetz, PhD, co-Founder and CEO, brings over 20 years of experience in establishing and growing biotechnology companies. Malkiel Cohen, PhD., VP of R&D at Wanda Fish, is an expert in stem cell technology and genomic engineering, and Yaron Sfadyah, LL.B & B.A., VP of Business Development at Wanda Fish, having 10+ global marketing and business development experience. Under an exclusive licensing and sponsored research agreement with Tufts University in Boston, Wanda Fish also works closely with David Kaplan, PhD, a world-leading academic authority in cellular agriculture.
